Backupdiscspace low - extend partition

Hi folks,

my Veeam-Backuppartition is running low on discspace. So I would like to extend the partition on this physical backupserver - running Server 2016 - using windows disc manager. Directly after my backuppartition there is a free space of about 2TB. Is it a problem for Veeam, when I extend the partition in the mentioned way?

Is there any best practice?

Update: As I see I also have a problem with clustersize, which makes it impossible to go greater than 16TB. So I might have to completely reconfigure the Veeam Backup-Store, so I have a new, clean store and reconfigure jobs and do an active full backup after that.

Any suggestions for that (I would like to go with NTFS) especially for cluster size.

I've done this in the past in lab, extending partitions with diskmgmt.msc was not an issue, but as a safety I would take a configuration backup and stop the Veeam services before extending. Probably it's okay without doing it, but better safe than sorry.

Not quite getting your comment on the cluster size, sounds like you have two volumes and you need to change the cluster size on one of them? Can you elaborate a bit more?

In short, extending the partition in Windows ought be fine, still take a configuration backup. If you need to reformat a partition hosting backups, then you will either need to temporarily store the backups elsewhere (our Backup Move feature will help) and move the backups back once you're done, or if you plan to start fresh then yes an active full will be required. If you need to reformat where Veeam itself is installed, use the Configuration Backup and Restore to avoid having to reconfigure all the jobs.

Hi,
I mean that because of the clustersize my Veeam-Backupstore-partition has, I cannot extent it further than 16TB. I do Backup_Copies to a NAS. Will this help in anyway, or do I have to move the backups on the backupserver elsewhere to reformat and then bring the backups back to the new reformatted backupstore of the backupserver?

If I am unable to move: I have to stop all veeam-services, reformat the backupstorage and then do a active full with the old backupjobs? Or do I have to recreate all backupjobs after completly formatting the backup space?

Veeam is installed on a separate partition - so no problem with this.

Backup Copy won't be useful here for "shuffling" the backups, use Backup Move as prescribed before if you want to temporarily move the backups around.

Just Active Full will be enough after you do your maintenance work, you don't need to re-create the backup jobs themselves.
