Cloud Director space allocation

Post by MVanek »

Hi all!
I just need to shed some light into my maybe just misunderstanding of some cloud practice.
Lets say we have few VMs running on our on-premise VVF 8 HA Cluster that we want to replicate to cloud provided environment.
In this case its VCD.
VMs are replicated to Veeam Provider - Cloud Director within Thin-Provisioned policy configured on VDC.
Lets pick one of those VMs - VM1 120GB disk / 8GB RAM.
Used space of this VM is about 45GB.
When I replicate this machine to cloud provider, storage allocation from VDC Quota reports 173GB used...

Veeam says it has replicated 45GB of data.

When Veeam replicate VM to cloud, it creates empty VM within VDC with HDD, CPU and RAM as needed.
This means that allocation is calculated from Empty virtual disk 120GB, Initial snap space (used space 45GB) and 8GB swap space.
Provider is telling me that this is typical and common PAYG way to account storage quota within cloud workspace.

So I dont want to blame anyone for intentional mislead and confuse , since I have no experience with this type of provided service.
But from what I can see that this is not really PAYG scenario.
Pay as you go is right the opossite for me..

What confuses me is fact, that I have storage quota set for specific capacity and this capacity is allocated with empty disk space AND
actually used space....

Is this really common practice within Cloud Director??
Thanks for answers

As far as I remember, we don’t calculate quotas or used space ourselves, we rely on the values returned by Cloud Director.

Could you please check with your provider how much space Cloud Director itself reports for the replicated VM?

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for response.

First of all I dont say that is Veeam problem at all. I just need to understand the math :)
Space calc is exactly as you said. All Veeam does is that it reports space from VCD.

But my problem is that real space allocation.

I pay for storage quota. Lets say 1TB, that is 1000GB for easy calculation.

I have VM 120GB disk and 8GB RAM - that is 128GB used space on that VCD.
VM has thin provisioned disk and real used space is 45GB.
So that 45 Gigs + 8GB swap makes it 53GB.
I have my own access to VDC as a customer, and I can see there is storage used - 120GB Disks and 45GB Snapshot

When I do full (initial) VM replication to Cloud Director, it consumes 128GB instantly from my subscribed Storage Quota + 45GB reported as Snapshot space, which I understand are the real data replicated by Veeam..
Storage Quota reports I have 827GB Free space

To me it sounds like I hypothetically need twice as space as I really need for just to replicate one VM to Veeam Cloud Provider.....Even if I just maintained only one restore point to have this replica I need to pay for twice storage capacity? Thats points me to this KB

I assume that could be the problem
