Feature / Request - Ability to Restore to alternate Azure Tenancies

We currently have a requirement as a result of a break and then merger, to be able to restore or migrate Virtual machines in Azure from one Entra ID Tenancy to another.

I understand that this is not currently possible, even though I have a Backup for Azure Appliance in each of the 2 tenancies in the same Veeam B&R Application.

During this move the On Premise domain will remain the same and we will just be moving to a new tenancy, so just looking to see if this is possible or if not, if this is on the Radar and when it could be implemented.

Hi Steve,

Veeam Backup & Replication allows you to restore backups of Azure VMs to any Azure tenant (Restore to Microsoft Azure).
Version 13 also includes Instant Recovery to Microsoft Azure (Instant Recovery to Microsoft Azure).

For your use case, I would try:
1.) Create backups of the virtual machines in the source tenant with Veeam Backup for Azure.
2.) Use Veeam Backup & Replication to start a “Restore to Microsoft Azure” or “Instant Recovery to Microsoft Azure” session to the target Azure tenant.

If you would protect both tenants with 1 VB for Azure instance, you can restore between those 2 tenants normally as well.

I have already got some backed up and when i have gone to do the restore it is only allowing me to use the existing tenancy / subscriptions in Azure, there is not an option to select or utilise the other new Tenancy. I do have a support case open already, but this is the response from the engineer

"Currently, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure does not support direct restoration of VMs across different Azure tenancies (Microsoft Entra tenants). The restore wizard only allows you to select subscriptions associated with the same Microsoft Entra tenant as the service account used during configuration. Not sure if this helps to advise, if I have found an incorrect option, then I would be happy to try that - We are currently on 12.3, do I need to upgrade to 13 for this functionality ?

I have tried to add the additional tenancy on there and I get an access denied, I think this is because the App Registration is in the original tenancy and not the new one, even though we have cross tenancy auth in place at the moment.

Hi Steve,

I got feedback from our team that you should be able to restore using Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure between tenants. If you are unable to add an extra tenant, we'll need insight via a support case since "Access denied" can mean anything sadly. If you haven't opened one for this issue, please open a new case for insight.

Hi Nielsengelen.

I did have a case open Case # 07971234, however, as per my post below, after raising it, the engineer replied, saying its not possible, therefore I have closed it, however you information is different.

I am in the process of trying to upgrade to V13, but having issues with a support case raised for that (Unable to start the REST Service on BEM). I can raise another case or can I re-open the case that has just been closed?

Are you able to take a look and see if there is something that should have been advised to me?
