Can someone explain this to me because I have ChatGPT'd and Gemini'd this thing to death and I am still no closer to understanding it.
I also tried reading some of the info on the site but again I don't understand.
Here is what I require. I am attempting to use GFS Media pools. Previously, I used regular Media pools and jobs and relied on a PowerShell script to modify the media pool to Monthly, Weekly, or Yearly depending on the time of month/year.
That is all broken now as my PowerShell commands broke with v13 and I have been unsuccessful at updating them to use the new v7 versions. Now I am looking at going to GFS Pools.
I need to do tape backups, and I have the following retentions. Keep a Daily backup for 30 days, a weekly backup for 4 weeks, a monthly backup for 36 months and a single Yearly backup set to 100 years.
My tape jobs will execute full backups on varying days of the week. I have about 34 backup jobs with about 216 VM total. So I split those up into tape jobs and run fulls of different backup jobs on different days of the week.
That all said, I have the GFS tape job set to test this and the GFS Schedule is set to do a weekly backup on Monday, A monthly the First Monday of the Month. Quarterly is disabled but I don't know how to set the Yearly backup day.
I need to do my yearly backup the first Monday of April every year. The schedule tab only says First Monday of each year or I can set a specific Day of a specific Month..
Which should I choose? My concern is if I choose, for example, Yearly backu pFirst day of April and the first day of April is not the same as the First Monday of April that will not line up with my Monthly and I will not get the backup I want. Worst case I might get a Full Yearly the first day of April and then possibly another Full Monthly on the First Monday, which is not what I want.

Hi Alan,

Unfortunately, at this time the scheduler doesn't allow for first Occurrence of Day Name per month, only calendar dates per month. Your goal is to make sure that the Monthly and Yearly dates always align to avoid the 2x Fulls on Tape, correct?
I think easiest way would be to do a Manual Active Full to the Yearly Media Set to avoid having to plan around the current schedule design -- this can be automated with Powershell to reduce chance of human error.
But I see why current scheduler for GFS is a bit of a headache for your planning. Will discuss internally.

Re: More GFS Woes
Yea trying to avoid the 2x full tape out in April if I can. I may be able to move the yearly full to January and use the first day in January option. I have 1 system that has to have the yearly full done in April because it has to happen after year-end financial activities, but maybe i can schedule that 1 in April and everything else in January. I'll have to do some digging to see if that is the only system. I would be nice to have the option to include/exclude specific months for the First X Day of the year. I know that is probably a pain to implement though. Or maybe something that makes the yearly backup run on the same day as the monthly backup.
