How to Migrate Jobs from Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) v12 to v13

Post by Ahmed.albatoosh »

During a recent upgrade project, I needed to migrate around 130 backup jobs from an existing Veeam Backup & Replication v12 server to a new VBR v13 server.

The challenge:
I wanted to move all jobs to the new server without upgrading the old console first, and I was looking for a clean and reliable migration method.

Recommended & Supported Method

The correct way to migrate jobs from VBR v12 to v13 is:

Option 1 – Backup & Restore Configuration (Recommended)

On the VBR v12 server:

Go to Configuration Backup

Create a manual configuration backup (.bco file)

Install Veeam Backup & Replication v13 on the new server

During installation (or after), choose:

Restore configuration

Select the configuration backup file from v12

Hello, Ahmed,

Just to confirm, you plan to migrate from v12 to a v13 Windows Backup Server?
Or you want to migrate to our new Veeam Software Appliance?

Restoring the configuration backup is the only supported method.
Procedure: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... grate.html

The Veeam Backup & Replication Database backend on new V13 must match the one used on V12. You can't change the major version and the database engine at the same time — if V12 used MS SQL, V13 must be installed on MS SQL too. Engine switch is a separate post-migration step: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... resql.html

One note: Veeam Backup & Replication you will install on a new server must be on Windows as well. You cannot use Linux Veeam Software Appliance as a migration target as of today.

If you face any issues during the migration, please open a support case.
