BitLocker support on VMware vm backups?

Post by squebel »

Hello,

I didn't find a lot here in the forums or out in documentation. I did open a ticket (07992843) on the matter to get support's official stance and they pointed me to some documentation about protecting encrypted vm's but my question is very specific to BitLocker. Does Veeam support protecting VMware vm's that have BitLocker protected volumes inside the Windows vm?

Hello,

Yes, Veeam supports BitLocker-encrypted volumes inside the Windows guest OS for VMWARE VMs.
This is a straightforward scenario that works without any special configuration.
The BitLocker encryption is transparent to the VM backup process.

But, there are limitations:

1. Backups will work, Full VM restore and all other image level restore options would also work, but File Level Recovery from VM Image Level backups will NOT work (there are workarounds like Instant recovery or disk restore and attaching to different VM, etc)

2. With Veeam Agent for Windows, there is more flexibility for Bitlocker
