Re: Teams chat backup - Update on premium API
There is no longer any cost with backing up Teams chats, since Aug'25, that is what this whole thread is about. So no more reason not to backup them.
But mind you, it is posts in channels that will be in the backup, one on one chats or group chats are not supported.

Re: Teams chat backup - Update on premium API
There was an update to 365 backup in December, 2025, but still nothing pertaining to the backup of 1:1 chats in Teams? Or did we miss that FR?

Re: Teams chat backup - Update on premium API
Correct — no changes for Teams Chats in v8.3.
New features and enhancements in version 8.3 are documented in KB4809.
Best,
Fabian

I'd like to add we're also waiting for this feature. Other vendors added 1:1 chat export months ago, and Veeam has been silent on the matter. If it is not in the product by Q2 2026 I'm afraid to say we will not be renewing our subscription - our compliance requirements will force us to a different product.

Hi Tim,
By Q2 is won't be ready for sure, this support should come later this year.

I'm also receiving pressure on this point. Veeam needs to see this as a high priority.thin_works wrote: ↑Feb 09, 2026 9:53 pm I'd like to add we're also waiting for this feature. Re: Teams chat backup - Update on premium API
As of now, the documentation still says that "Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 turns off team chats backup to avoid unexpected costs incurred by Microsoft".
Since this underlying cause is gone since August 2025 now, does Back up entire organization now include the Teams chats and the documentation is several months outdated - or does it still turn off Teams chats backup for no good reason at all?
I suspect the latter, because my VBO365 8.3.0.2201 still does not backup Teams chats, despite me completing the wizard and specifically turning on Teams chat backup.
At least there are no posts to see in the Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Teams.

Re: Teams chat backup - Update on premium API
Hi Thomas,
Yes — looks like we need to update our Help Center. I’ll ask the Tech Writer team whether we can update our statement in the Help Center.
Best,
Fabian

It’s still disabled today, because enabling it would require additional Graph API permissions for the backup application in each tenant. Therefore we can’t just “enable” it. We can consider adding this in one of the next minor updates and clearly document the required additional permissions in the release notes. However, I expect some pushback from Service Providers, as this would mean updating app permissions across all of their protected customer tenants.or does it still turn off Teams chats backup for no good reason at all?
With that option enabled, you should see Teams channel conversations being backed up — not private or group chats. Those chats require new Graph API calls to be implemented, which Polina mentioned in her earlier comment back (“later this year”).I suspect the latter, because my VBO365 8.3.0.2201 still does not backup Teams chats, despite me completing the wizard and specifically turning on Teams chat backup.

The permissions that would be activated in the wizard ("Grant the required permissions to this application and register its certificate in Microsoft Entra ID")?because enabling it would require additional Graph API permissions for the backup application in each tenant.
So after activating Teams chat backup in the organization details, the existing backup job with the option "Back up entire organization" should automatically include Teams chats?

Hi Thomas,
1.) Yes, thats the automated option ("Grant the required permissions to this application and register its certificate in Microsoft Entra ID")
2.) Not yet. In v8.3, you still have to create a job, add <organization> and enable "Teams chats" in processing options.

Fabian

Re: Teams chat backup - Update on premium API
Okay, so "Back up entire organization" still does not back up the entire organization.
But is Veeams definition of the specific object type "organization" ("Mail, Archive, OneDrive, Sites, Teams and Teams chats") still valid?
According to that definition manually choosing Organization, Users and Groups should include everything? No need to choose Sites and Teams?
I think the documentation could really be much clearer about this.
I appreciate the fine tuning possibilities but a catchall option is long overdue.
