[V13] Gateway server in Azure ...

Post by Didi7 »

Hi everybody, after studying the Help center, I am still uncertain about what kind of machine is most suitable as a Gateway server in MS Azure.

Does Veeam offer complete VIA-based machines for deployment from Azure Marketplace?

Quote from Help center:
Gateway servers can be deployed using the Veeam JeOS image by selecting the Infrastructure Appliance option

Using the VIA-based ISO is not possible, as it cannot be configured due to the lack of a Console, correct?

Or does Veeam prefer the deployment of an Ubuntu oder Windows server for Azure Gateways and e.g. WAN Accelerators?

Thank you,
Didi7

The Help Center is about just deploying a VIA to act as a gateway server, not necessarily in Azure. Since you cannot use a custom ISO (essentially the VIA ISO) for a VM in Azure, the only way you'd be able to get a VIA in Azure is to deploy it locally as a Hyper-V VM, upload the VHD to Azure and use that VHD as an image for a new Azure VM.

Any supported Windows or Linux machine can be used as a Gateway server though (size will depend on the workloads it handles). You can deploy a base machine, or use any of the hardened prebuilt images the Azure marketplace has...but its probably best to deploy a base image and harden it yourself. Veeam really doesn't have a preference of Windows vs Linux.

Hello RyanJ,

thank you for your valuable answer. Ok, pre-deploying a VIA-based machine on Hyper-V would be an option. In this case updates could be centrally managed by the Veeam Software Appliance, if preferred.

To the community.
Does anybody use a pre-deployed VIA-based Hyper-V machine in Azure and how it's going?
