When creating a new Virtual Machine backup policy, under the Source section > Resources > Specify resources to protect: "All", there is not option to exclude systems or resource groups that may not be needed to be backed up. Its either All, a specific selection of Virtual Machines, a specific selection of Resource Groups, or use of tags. This is an issue if there are managed VMs that get spun up and destroyed daily (say Databricks), which creates errors with read/write actions even when the permissions are inherited, but otherwise the VMs don't need to be backed up because data is elsewhere. However, doing one of the above 4 options, backing up everything and accepting errors in the backups even though the rest will finish successfully except for the managed VM, results in either manual input every time a system is created, adding resource groups every time they are created, or adjusting a standardized tag methodology that has already been implemented.
Allowing the option to exclude a resource group, would provide flexibility for those who are looking to backup all VMs except specific managed systems.

Re: Feature Request: Azure Virtual Machine Policy Exclusion
Hi,
Under the same step where you configure which resources to back up, you can also exclude items. It is seperate from the inclusion section.
Additionally you can combine tags and VMs to make specific groups using the “link” button.
For more details, please check the user guide.
