IPU in backup server

Post by perjonsson1960 »

Folks,

Is it possible (and supported) to do an In-Place Upgrade (IPU) in the B&R backup server, from Windows Server 2022 to 2025?
We are running B&R v12.3.2.4465

Kind regards,
PJ

I don't know about supported, but I think the possibility would be dependent on the database. I seem to remember that Microsoft does not support In-Place Upgrades of Windows for MS-SQL and I do not know if PostgreSQL allows that. Also if you use a ReFS repository on the Windows 2022 I would discourage you from using Windows Server 2025.
Personally I would try to avoid that and just install a fresh system and restore a config backup. Much less hassle than an In-Place Upgrade.

The Veeam database resides in an external SQL server, we are not using SQL Express in the backup server anymore.
As for ReFS, the backup server has the NTFS file system. But the repository server, also running Windows Server 2022, uses ReFS on the backup volumes.

Hi Per,

Personally, I would never do an in-place upgrade in production, even if it should work. I’ve always preferred a clean deployment.
Regarding in-place upgrades and ReFS repositories: we recommend against it. There have been known issues after an in-place OS upgrade:

Why not use this opportunity to rebuild your backup environment with the Veeam Software Appliance?

Call me old-school, but I am not familiar with Veeam Software Appliance.
Is that something that can be incorporated into an existing environment, with existing backup jobs, backups and repositories?
And is it available within the legacy Enterprise Plus license model, or is VUL required? As I said, old-school... :)

Unfortunately, you need a VUL license to run the backup server as our new Software Appliance.
But you can still use a socket license to use Infrastructure Appliances for remote components together with a Windows-based backup server.

You can use our appliances as follows:
- Veeam Software Appliance: Backup Server (with on-host backup repository, proxy, etc.)
- Veeam Infrastructure Appliance: Backup remote components such as proxies, repositories, etc.

A direct conversion option through configuration restore is in development.
However, a customer can already do a manual migration by deploying a new Software Appliance, reconnecting old repositories, recreating the backup jobs, and mapping them to imported backup files. The Move feature can be used to move backups from the old repositories to new repositories deployed on an Infrastructure Appliance.

I did many of them , they work fine

Just download the updated Windows Server 2025 ISO of February / March , don't use the original one from November 2024 ( I had upgrade issues with the original one)

Thank you for your replies!

As I understand, it should be possible to do a clean install of B&R in a 2025 server, and do a restore of the config backup?
Do I need to map all the backups and backup copies, or is that done by the restore of the config?
And since we are still on B&R 12, is Server 2025 supported by that version?
