Veeam upgrade in shared server VBO and VBR

Post by taha »

Hi everyone,

I’m finalizing an upgrade plan and need to verify the execution order and rollback strategy for a shared server.

Environment:

Backup Server: Single physical Windows Server 2022.

Current VBR: 12.3.2.4165 (Protecting a 3-node Nutanix AHV cluster running AOS 6.10.1.10 and a physical Windows Server 2019 AD DC).

Current VBO: 8.1.2.3301.

Target: Latest available versions (following KB4325).

My Questions:

Upgrade Order: I’ve noticed in some documentation that when VBR and VBO are co-located, VBO should be upgraded first, followed by VBR. Can anyone confirm if this is still the best practice to avoid conflicts with shared components like Veeam Explorers?

The Rollback Dilemma: Since this is a physical shared server, a simple VM snapshot isn't an option. If the VBO upgrade succeeds but the VBR upgrade fails (or vice versa), what is the safest way to rollback considering the shared database/components? Would a Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) of the entire OS be the only clean way back, or is there a way to roll back only one of the applications?

I’d appreciate any suggestions or "lessons learned" from those running this specific co-located setup on physical hardware.

Thanks!

Hi taha, welcome to the forums.

Correct, you should Upgrade Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 (VBO) first, then proceed to upgrade Veeam Backup and Replication.

As for downgrades, regrettably there are no supported downgrade paths. If there are issues after the upgrade, reach out to Veeam Support for assistance. I do recommend a Configuration backup for Veeam Backup & Replication prior to updating as a safety precaution, but still if there is an issue after the upgrade, it would be required to reach out to Veeam Support to review the situation and advise on remediation steps.
