Are you serious? The VBR13 console cannot be updated.

Post by SkyDiver79 »

Hi,
You have a problem (bug?) that shouldn't exist in 2026 given certain security requirements.

The VBR13 Console tries to perform an update after VBR has been updated; so far, so good.
When you click "Update Console," the download doesn't work and the update doesn't start.
If you run the console as an administrator and click "Update," an error message appears stating that MS Edge cannot access certain folders.

After extensive testing, we disabled the security policy on the clients and logged in as an administrator on the client, and then the console update worked immediately.

You can't be serious—we have to log in as an administrator on a client just to update the console.

Hi Falk,

Yes, local administrator permissions are required to install new versions of the console.

The good news is that our new Web UI will remove this requirement over time. Our summer update (v13.1) will add many more workloads and settings, so you won’t have to rely on the Windows-based console in the future. And we have more updates planned (v13.2, …).

May I ask which features are most important to you in the Web UI before you can move away from the Windows-based backup console in your environment?

Best,

Hi Fabian,
To me, "Administrator Permissions" means that you could also update the console by "run as administrator".
And since that doesn't work, it feels like a step back to the 2000s. It used to work before—updating with "run as."

Unfortunately, you can't manage SMB/NFS repositories in the web UI, so we have to use the console.

You can download the patch and run as administrator without logging in interactively as an administrator.

(from tech support for 13.0.1.2067)
To manually update the Veeam Backup & Replication console, please go to the following link to download the updater ISO file: https://www.veeam.com/kb4738
The patch is over 3Gb.

I think it's a really bad workaround to have to download a 3.3 GB ISO file from the internet when the backup server could provide it at LAN speeds.
It can't be that hard to build in a working download feature.

I logged this issue before and had a support case open and the result was it's being addressed, but no timescale. It makes updating if you have LAPS a right pain.

In the meantime the only option is to login as adminstrator user (if you can) and let the console update or file a full installation file to download which does let you run by escalating to administrator. Although it's a shame that the download from the console website doesn't always have the latest version, but is an old version you then have to patch.
