Proxmox Backup Copy Job - can't exclude vm?

Post by squebel »

Hello,

It appears the "Exclusions" button is greyed out on Backup Copy Jobs where the "Objects to process" is a PVE backup job. I'm on 12.3.2.4465. Is this not supported? I couldn't find anything about this. Support is looking at it in case 08056157 after working through some issues where an Active Full was needed and found out we couldn't do any exclusions on this type of BCJ.

Hi squebel,

Yes; exclusions are currently only available for vSphere, vCloud Director and Hyper-V.
We have noted it as a possible improvement for a future version.

I’ll ask our Help Center team to add a note to the documentation: Help Center.

Thanks, Fabian. That is unfortunate and means we have to run an active full for the entire job. Is there a particular technical reason this isn't up to parity with the 3 products you mentioned? Is there a core functionality of how BCJ works that can't be integrated with PVE?

It was simply never implemented. Hyper-V and vSphere integration was built differently from our other hypervisors (for example, Nutanix, Proxmox, and HPE VM Essentials). For these, we’ve started a different approach using platform plugins, which means the feature set is not always exactly identical to our long‑standing hypervisors (Hyper-V, vSphere).

We’re trying to bring all the smaller but useful Hyper-V/vSphere features to the platform plug-in hypervisors as well, but it will take time.
That is unfortunate and means we have to run an active full for the entire job.
Unfortunately, yes. I tried to think of a clean workaround but couldn’t find one. One possible option would be to move the affected VMs into a separate backup job with a separate backup copy job. Not ideal, since you’d have to manage multiple jobs with the same settings afterwards.
