Delete Guest File Indices
Good morning-
I recently made a change to my VBR jobs so that not all of my VMs were being indexed (I was indexing every server in my environment, but after further thought, decided that this was overkill). Is there a way to delete all of the previous indices so that I can start from scratch with only the VMs that I have configured to be indexed?

Hi Brian,
You may want to clear the Catalog folder on your Veeam B&R server, as this is the place where index database resides, and then start VM guest indexing from scratch.

I just tried to do my first restore through Enterprise Manager since changing the servers that I was indexing (from all, to a select few). However, when I click the ellipses button next to the VM name box, it displays a message that says, "Found 100+ results. Please, specify the name of VM..." Is there something I need to do in order to purge this data from Enterprise Manager? I'm expecting this screen to only show a handful of VMs now that I've changed my indexing.

Your Enterprise Manager has its own Catalog folder. Have you cleared that one too?

I can't say that I have. Is it in the same location as the VBR catalog? Does this just copy over any new content from the VBR server (it's not kept in sync)?

It's in the same if you have Enterprise Manager installed on the Veeam B&R machine. Otherwise, it's in the C:\VBRCatalog folder on the Enterprise Manager machine and the content of the folders is periodically synced.

Thanks foggy. I'm running EM on a different server, so is there a setting somewhere to control how often the folders are synced? I cleaned up my VBR index folder about 2 weeks ago, so I'm surprised that EM doesn't match.

Actually, the mechanism does not synchronize manual deletion of the indices. It copies the newly created ones from the console and removes those gone due to retention. So you need to manually clean up both catalogs in your case.

That makes a lot of sense. If I delete the contents of the \VBRCatalog on my EM server, will it then copy over everything that it needs or do I need to be more selective with my deleting?

Yes, Enterprise Manager will copy all existing data from your Veeam B&R server catalog.

Success! I was a bit over aggressive with my deleting and received an error when I tried to run the sync, but this was fixed by removing my VBR server and adding it back in. Thanks again.
