VMware discontinues vRAM licensing

I know this isn't specific to Veeam, so mods feel free to delete if not relevant enough, but thought it would interest many VMWare-based Veeam users..

At least with CPU-based licensing it more closely aligns with Veeam's licensing model.

Just remember anyway, at the moment there is no confirmation coming from VMware itself about these rumors. Will see next monday 27 at the first VMworld keynote.

Of course they will though, it was a stupid policy in the first place. The only other balls-up in terms of goodwill that compares recently is Apple appointing someone from Dixons group - who are renowned for their terrible customer shopping experience - to run their shops.

Anyway my real concern is what will come with it. There was much excitement and expectation about v5 - until the vTax page went up. My fear is what burried treasure they'll have this time.

I think there will be no hidden "treasures". Just because they are really constrained by Microsoft these days... can no longer do whatever they want around licensing, won't fly with customers these days.

Just checked with VMware licensing folks, free ESXi is to remain.

Yes it's staying, but on 5.0. Licensing stated this morning that there would be no free license for 5.1. But either way, the 32GB cap on the free version is staying put too (according to the licensing PDF).
