[Backup Repo] Best place to store the backups

Post by unflux »

Dear Veeam,

I'm new into Veeam to be honest. I'm using Veaam Backup & Replication for 2 days now, to test his options and abilities ( before we buy a license ).

We added the VMware ESXi host which are running 6 virtual machines. We would like to backup all the VM's, but wel dont know which backup repository is the best option.

Our setup:
1x VMware ESXi server which is running 6 virtual machines
The ESXi server uses:
2x 120GB SSD
1x 1TB HDD

We dont have any external server/storage where we can pun those vm backups on.

Which option do you prefer? Using a Linux backup reposirory? but then we have to make a vm with Linux on it.. thats kinda weird

Thnx in advance!

Where did you installed Veeam? In another VM? If so, there is no need to add any other server to o backups.
In such simple scenarios, your best and cheapest solution is some NAS storage (qnap, iomega, netgear...) that can share its disks via CIFS protocol, also referred as Windows Networking. You can then save Veeam backups in it.

By the way, you better also take care of your ESXi setup, you are running VMs in a single 1 TB HDD, with no raid on it? Better change it to a raid storage...

Luca.

Luca, thanks for your reply!

We are running 3 HDD' s in RAID. I installed VEEAM on my local PC at this moment, so the best option is to Install it on a NAS?

Jay, it's ok to install Veeam B&R on your local PC but use one of your existing VMs as backup proxy and NAS as the backup repository. I would recommend to review the architecture section of the user guide to better understand the principles of product operation and its components.

Based on the size of your environment, you can just install all Veeam components in one windows VM; you cannot install any Veeam components in non-windows systems, nor in NAS.
Even if an embedded Veeam repository in some NAS could be a nice idea for future releases :)
