Quick Question on Excluding Disks

Post by cwilson »

When using the disk exclusion option on a backup job, specifically when choosing to backup ONLY system disks, does this mean it will only backup the C: drive on Windows servers? Or will it backup local drives such as c:, d:, e:, etc.? Also, how does this work for Linux? Does it backup only the boot, / and root partitions or all partitions that are local and or part of the OS?

Basically I want to backup all LOCAL drives but ensure that SAN volumes are excluded. Unfortunately our SAN volumes are not all the same drive letter and this varies from server to server...as some servers might have 5+ SAN volumes attached, there is no easy way to exclude a certain drive letter per backup job without creating a bunch of different backup jobs (in which case we already have 9).

Just looking for a bit more clarification.

Thanks

System disk means the first SCSI virtual disk.
How are those SAN volumes are presented to VM?

Thanks.

As for your second question. They are guest initiated iscsi connections.

Then just don't worry about them, as they will be skipped automatically (just like any other unsupported disk type).

Okay perfect. Was not sure if iscsi volumes would be picked up a system related disk or not given its visibility within the OS.

Thanks Anton.

Apart from that, just to let you know, you can set disk exclusions for VMs individually, selecting different disks to be excluded for each particular VM in the job (even in case the job is configured to backup the whole container).

Thanks foggy. I did realize this. We are actually utilizing that functionality on a handful of systems grouped into the same backup job. For globally, given we have shy of 500 vm's, with atleast 25% having more then a single OS disk (p2v conversions) it would prove to be a tedious undertaking otherwise :-)
