Adding Lefthand Storage to Veeam Backup 6.5

Post by awellendorf »

I give Veeam the IP address of my Lefhand cluster but it times out server can ping the SAN. Is there something I need to set in Lefthand?

Looks like firewall issues, try disabling it temporary.
Try entering IP address of the management server.

I can connect to the CLIQ CLI and login from that server with putty.

In Veeam sometimes it says can not connect to the Port 16022, then sometimes it says authentication failed.

Running SANIQ 9.5
P4500G2
Tried connecting to the Nodes IP and the Virtual IP.

Logon seems to take some time to complete in SSH. Maybe it times out?

I checked and there are no known issues around this functionality (but we do already have customers using it successfully). Please open a support case for investigation.

I can confirm that connection to LeftHand storage is fast and I'm seeing no timeout, we use both physical and VSA models, and once I configured the virtual IP of every cluster as the target IP in Veeam, connection completes in few seconds.

Hi Aaron, thanks for the screenshot, but I'm afraid we need to more information to assist you with this. Could you please open a support ticket with our technical team?

Aaron, Veeam and LeftHand are on the same subnet, or routed? Is there any network filter between the two? Basically, you would see the same problems if trying to connect from Veeam to LeftHand via CMC console, have you tried it?
I added a second NIC to Veeam server and connected it to the iscsi network where LeftHand lies, and had no problems with default configurations on both sides...

That's what I also have seen.
The Veeam B&Rr Server has to have full access to the iSCSI network. Then it can trigger the snasphots. The snapshots are done by the P4000 Box which is holding the Volume and not by CMC.
If you want to use Application-Aware Snapshots you have to install the Application-Aware Snapshot Manager (latest version from CMC download folder) at the vCenter Server which also needs access to iSCSI Network.
In CMC you have to use the iSCSI facing address of the vCenter as "Controlling IP Address" for the ESX Hosts.
Then the "Pegasus ..." Service at the vCenter Server has to be started with local Admin account. Now it should work. ;-)

HI All,

Don't suppose it's possible to add an HP Lefthand P2000 G3 SAS to VB6.5?
Are there any plans to support this entry-level device in the future?

Kind Regards
Clayton

Hi Clayton, I can only say for sure that it is not going to be the very next storage we will add support for.

Also, please note that despite of its name, P2000 has nothing to deal with LeftHand (it is an OEM product from company called DotHill). Overall, I do not believe HP considers this product as strategic, which would certainly affect prioritization on our side.

Thanks!

Also to be considered, on those low-end storages snapshots are not efficient as in midrange storages (like LeftHand or similar) and hi-end ones. Since VESS uses san snapshots, it's more likely to be implemented on those storages that can be effectively used with their snapshots.
Let's say I have a Qnap (ok, extreme example...), since I do not use their internal snapshot capabilities, I would not care about it beeing supported by VESS.
