Actually I would say completely the opposite - if there is no real need in RDM, then proceed with using VMDKs, as there no real performance benefit in RDM vs VMDK (based on what I hear on these forums).

Ryan, are you probably using your DAS as both primary and backup storage? This is not considered to be the best practice actually (as well as backup to VMFS) as you might lose everything in the case of its failure. If not and it is a dedicated backup storage, I would rather present it to some Windows server to backup to NTFS formatted LUN.
