Can I replicate directly to NFS SAN?

Post by mikegodwin »

We have a SAN at our datacenter that supports NFS. We have a VPN to the datacenter. Can I replicate directly to the datacenter SAN? I'm not sure exactly what I need on the datacenter side. A backup proxy, something else?

Yes, you can replicate your production VMs to your NFS SAN. To do that, you need point your replication job to the ESX(i) host connected to this SAN device. In order to run replication jobs across the WAN link, it is recommended to have two proxy servers, one on the source site (to retrieve VM data, compress it and the send to the DR site) and the second one on the target location (to decompress data and save it on our SAN device).

See our User Guide (page 12) for further details about proxy servers.

Thanks Vitaly. Let me make sure I understand.

Replicate to remote site needs: ESXi host at remote site
Backup to remote site needs: Backup repository on Linux machine at remote site with NFS share mounted (can this be Windows, or only Linux?)

Either way: Need a backup proxy on at remote site on a Windows machine

Is this all correct?

Absolutely! ;)

P.S. Backup repository can be either Linux or Windows, though I'm not sure how reliable NFS implementation on Windows server is.

Not so reliable to be used in these situations :)
If you have an NFS storage at remote site, your best choice is to deploy a linux server, mount the NFS storage on it, and then connect the linux machine directly into Veeam as a new repository. In this way Veeam can deploy the repository agent into it and speed up the jobs. I've seen this trick in many DataDomain deployments for example, so the native NFS could be used instead of CIFS (nfs runs better than cifs on DD...)
