Replication failover to DR site

Post by PaulVM »

I've been through the Veeam replication video but this leaves the following unanswered question.

If I replicate to the DR Site, but the metadata is in a repository on the Main site how do I recover VM's in the event that an Aeroplane lands on the Main Site thus completely destroying the Main site?

Metadata files are not required for VM failover operations, so it's safe to lose them.

So how do you failover? How would Veeam at the DR site know about the replica's etc?

Metadata files are used in VM digest calculation, this operation is only performed during replication job runs. In order to failover just use your backup server that is managing these replicas from the remote site, no extra steps are required.

In addition, Veeam Backup & Replication uses replica metadata files to quickly detect changed blocks of data between two replica states. These files, if lost, would be rebuilt on the next job run (nevertheless, this run is likely to take a bit longer than usual).

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
