Double backup

Post by marius roma »

I need to replace the NAS (let's say, NAS1) currently hosting my baakup with a new NAS (let's say, NAS2) that should perform better.
To avoid possible problems I plan to use both backup destinations for a limited time (1-2 weeks).
Is there any problem if I schedule two backup jobs for the same VM every night, lets say a backup on NAS1 at 2AM and a backup on NAS2 at 5AM?
Can this create any kind of problems?
As soon as I am sure that NAS2 works fine I will simply remove NAS1 and cancel the related jobs.
Is there any reason for not doing what I am considering or for doing anything different?

Yes, you can probably do it.

Also, be aware that a VM can be processed only by one job at one time, another jobs willing to process it will stand in a queue, waiting for the first job completion.

Additionally, don’t forget about copying all of your backup-files to second NAS and mapping it to the newly created job.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Thank you to everybody for the answers.

Do you mean copying all the .vbk and .vib files? It's what I don't want to do...
If I don't copy the files, will the backups be unusable?

What do you mean by “backups will be unusable”?

Although I just thought it might be useful in your case to prolongate already existing chain on your new NAS storage, it’s certainly possible to create a new job from the scratch, starting completely new backup chain. Is that what you’re looking for?

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Hello
I have the same Question, but in my case permanent: Is this right / possible ?

in the past we must start Backup from zero by a invalid Backup File (very big reversed inkr.), our Backup timeframe is 4 Days for a full and we get problems with the snapshot size while backup at production time...
So we decide we make it double to have 2 independend Backup repositorys.

I have 2 Jobs for the same set of VMs.
- 1. Job synthetic Full to NAS1
- 2. Job reversed inkremental to NAS2

All Jobs use CBT, is CBT working independend for each Job, so one NAS has the same daily work only at a other starttime as the other ?

Hi.

Yes, CBT can be used with multiple jobs on same VM (just don't schedule them same time.
See the FAQ:

Hi, Ulrich. Yep, Yizhar is completely right here; there wouldn’t be any CBT issues with two jobs backing up same VMs. Thanks.
