receiving a database error popup while backing up vm

Post by tom11011 »

Hi Group,

I'm receiving a popup message during backup of a particular virtual machine. The backup does complete, but the stats in the backup job seem to freeze during the backup. Although the backup does finish.

"failed to retrieve updated or changed rows from the table reportsessionview. usn:0 unexpected end of file has occured."

The backup server seems to crawl when viewing it with remote desktop at this point until the backup finishes.

Are you using SQL Express database directly installed on the Veeam backup server? I've seen many different errors, with obscure and weird messages, but all of them were caused at the end by lack on RAM on the server hosting the Veeam database, especially when it's on the same machine with Veeam itself.
Depending on the size of the environment, consider adding more RAM to the server, or switch to SQL Server standard.

Yes, it is sqlexpress installed locally to the veeam server. However, this server has 16gigs of memory installed running Win2k8 R2 so I don't think that could be the problem?

As far as I know SQL Server Express always had a limit of max supported RAM, for example, SQL Server Express 2008 R2 only supports from 1 to 4 GBs max.

I'm going to take that back. It seems all 16gigs were maxed out. When I logged off the rdp console and then logged back in and opened veeam, memory consumption was down to 2 gigs. Something must be leaking memory somewhere on the server.

Thanks for your reply.

Is this server also your repository (usually when you install Veeam BR all in one server)? Then it could also be memory consumption by Windows to open and manage pretty large VBK files, for example in reverse incremental backup jobs. I wrote something about this behaviour here:
http://www.vuemuer.it/en/?p=4064
even if it would not be your problem, rammap can help you to investigate who is consuming the server memory.

yes, it is the repository server and we do use reverse incrementals. I'll have a look at your link.

Shrink the database (I used MS SQL tools) mine started at 6gb+ and ended at just over 1.3gb
and problem went away

Hello,

Thanks for sharing the solution. However, I should note that all workaround ideas must be approved by our support, especially when we're discussing database-related issues. Also, make sure that you enabled configuration backup before making any changes to Veeam database. A solution that helped in one case can be useless or even potentially dangerous in another scenario.

Thanks!
