High CPU utilization during backup job

Post by ManuelRighi »

Hello,
I have a B&R 6.5.0.109 on a Virtual Machine.
During backup job my vCPU (on Backup VM) is 100%

My infrastructure is:

DELL R510, Ram 32 Gb, 2x Xeon E5620 (quad core), 12 HD (2Tb cad) SAS Nearline 7200 rpm (RAID 5), controller PERC H700 integrated
DELL MD1200, dual controller, 12 HD (3 Tb cad) SAS Nearline 7200 rpm (RAID 5), connected to Dell R510 with controller PERC H800 (cache 1gb) and SAS cable

Esxi 5.1 is installed on USB pendrive.
I have 2 VM's.
One VM is for data storage with Windows 2012 (datastore is local disks on R510)
One VM is for backup with Windows 2012 (vdisk with S.O. is on local disk on R510, vdisks for backup is on MD1200)

The VM for data storage is big (8 Tb actually).

When backup job is running, the vCPU of Backup VM is 100 %.
I try to assign 8vCPU to Backup VM, but all vCPU is 100%.

The backup job mode is "Reversed Incremental".

Can you help me to reduce cpu usage ?

I have similar problem on VM with exchange 2007 server (store.exe 30-40%, without backup 3-10%). Not at begining, but after some time of backup job. VM becomes slow.

So, you’re saying that you see 100% CPU utilization on VB&R machine during backup run, right?

Assuming that this machine is also playing the role of your default proxy and no additional ones are being used, I’d say, it’s something totally expected, taking into account on-the-fly data compression and deduplication.

In order to decrease CPU utilization, it might be worth deploying additional proxy server and using it during backup/replication job. Thus, the compression and deduplication tasks would be offloaded to it, letting you primary VB&R be responsible for only management tasks.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Sounds right to me, mine spike hard on Exchange server and SQL server backups. When I give the Veeam VM 16 gigs of ram and 2 x 4 procs it usually ends CPU issues like that.

this is also from a Dell R910 (700H) and a MD3200 (with 1200 attached).

B&R 7.0 release will have the new default compression ratio that is specifically optimized for low CPU usage, so this should bring dramatic improvement.

I try the job without deduplication and compression, and the CPU usage is 40/50 %
