Number of licenses required

Post by stanj »

We have two ESXi servers, no san or nas or vCenter.

The plan is to backup the VMs to a shared network device from the active esxi server.
If the active ESXi server fails, the vms will be restored to the second ESXI server.
The ESXi servers are dual core dell r720s.

How many licenses do we need 2 or 4?

Thanks

Hi Stan, you need to have license keys only for one/active ESX(i) server. Thanks!

ok,

then, if the first esxi server fails, the second one would need to be powerd up, license added, then added to the VEEAM backup in order to restore the VMs?

vs

having the second esxi server licensed for VEEAM, on line, and already added to VEEAM backup so the VMs could be restored if the first esxi server fails,,which seems faster,,,

Stan, you need to license the second host only in case you are going to run backup/replication jobs against VMs residing on it. You do not need to license the host to be able to restore VMs on it. You can add the second host to Veeam B&R UI without licensing it.

How many physical sockets do you have on the host? One or two? If it is just a single socket with dual cores, then you need to buy only 1 license key.

To locate the number of sockets used, open vSphere Client -> connect to your host -> and click on the Summary Tab to review the number of sockets you have.

Be careful also Xeon E5-2670 are 8-core processors, so you will need Tier B licenses.
