Post activity job functionality needs enhancing

Post by maverick964_uk »

I find that the post activity job functionality in Veeam is very inflexible.
Based on a given solution the Veeam backup process could rely heavily on post activity jobs!!

Enhancements I would like to see is that its configurable to say whether the post job runs or not. ie. should only run is succeed and not fail.

Also with multiple proxies it would seem that the post activity job only runs on the veeam backup server. I want it to run on another backup proxy if possible.

EXAMPLE: Backup runs on the proxy and backs up to local disk. I want a script to be able to run which copies the data to a CIFS share or other location....This has to run on the proxy, not the veeam server.

thanks :?

many thanks. Would appreciate your thoughts...

I mainly come from a background using enterprise backup products. Veeam has great features but I feel it does lack some basic requirements in flexibility. Examples being the post activity job and scheduling.

you can always run a "master" script on your backup server which will call the script on the relevent server.

yes possible Chris but unfortunately it all gets too messy....

Can I have one job which backs up 4 datastores and each datastore writes to a different proxy?? (assuming I have 4 proxies configured?)

thanks

I think you have your naming conventions back to front - its possibly confusing folk :)

VBR components:

Backup Server - manages jobs
Proxy Server - Moves Data
Repository - Writes Data

note that some of these roles can be on the same box but dont have to be.
How big are those Datastores ?

A job can be processed by multiple proxies but can only be written to *1* repository. If you want to write to 4 different locations you would need to define a repository for each location. Bear in mind we automatically create a sub folder per job.

Taking your example above literally you can add 4 datastores to a job and allow it to be run by 4 different proxies , but I don't think that is what you want.

thanks Chris....

I understand the components but I just want to try and avoid creating too many backups.

Here is what we have.......
vcenter 5.1
4 x 1TB datastores
4 x virtual proxies
1 x veeam server (VM)

I want potentially one job and in that job each datastore (4 in total) is processed by a dedicated proxy (4 proxies).
Each proxy writes to the one repository on the veeam server....(yes over the network but thats ok....for now)

post activity job writes all the data to a CIFS backup appliance.

thoughts?
