Constant Replication - Amounts of Traferred Data

Hello Community,

I’m trying to understand the amount of data transferred of 2 VM's that are being constantly replicated with Optimal Compression, WAN Target Deduplication & VSS enabled.

One it's an exchange 2003 server and the other one is a file server with SQL Server.
During working hours the average amount of data transferred is between 300 - 700 MB, and randomly off hours is increasing up to 10 GB!

I’m tracking the VM's to see what changes they might have, but no luck yet.

Is there any Veeam log i can check to see what kind of data has changed in order to track those random gigantic changes?

Guillermo, there's no way you can find out what has changed inside the VM guest OS with Veeam B&R (other than on the block level). Could the reason be in some database maintenance tasks scheduled for off-hours? Some defragmentation/antivirus scans?

What is the job configuration (including scheduling settings)?

Hi Foggy, thanks for the reply.

All maintenance is done manually except for backups.
I'm using Forefront with no scheduled scans.
The scheduling for the job is manual launch of a backup job on VB&R server 1 and after that job completes via powershell i start on VB&R server 2 a replication job and after that job is done it starts the backup job on server 1 again (it's constant and in chain)

What are the data read/transferred rate for these VMs when the amount of changes increases?

This is the processing rate, however what I meant was the amount of read and transferred data. Nevermind, from your first post it is clear that the amount of transferred data increases significantly, so there is definitely something in your VM that changes large amount of blocks and this is the source of the issue.

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

After investigating further i've found that another Legacy backup process for the 2003 Exchange VM was generating changes that the VSS Veeam backup replicated, and that's why the amount of data.

On the other VM (SQL + Files), there was a remote scheduled scan for the Forefront AV Solution, that was generating the changed blocks. this was scheduled by a remote server on our headquarters, and no one told me...
I've found this after reviewing all the process handles and TCP connections at the moments of the increased volume replication for this VM.
