Direct SAN with How-Swap Removable Drive Backup

Post by SmithErick »

I got Direct SAN all setup and rolling. However, we know that the disable automount is a requirement to have the iSCSI LUNS not become corrupt. We utilize a Hot-Swap drive for an off-site backup nightly, is there a way I can still make those drives (5) mount without manually adding the drive letter and path?

Do you use Windows Server 2008 R2 as a backup proxy? Have you tried using "SAN policy" setting instead of automount? It looks like if you set SAN policy to OfflineShared, it should do the trick with swapped drives.

See this KB article for more details: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... s.10).aspx

It was already set to Offline Shared, back to the drawing board.

Erick, what happens if you once initialize these disk, detach them and then bring them back? Do these disks still require initialization?

It sure doesn't! I just hit my end of the week backup drive (M-F), so I was having the problem because every day was a new drive. I assume the initial auto-mount disable cleared the initialization for the removable drives. This issue is now fixed, sometimes we think into things too much! Thank you very very much!

I spoke too soon. This issue still exists. I am afraid to try anything without a solid answer and I do not want to corrupt my LUN.

I just started with 6.5 so I have not tested this yet but plan to.

Create a second backup repository on a differnt server for your removal disks, that server does not need LUN access so there is no risk.

Anyone have an update? I am still troubled with this issue, I am afraid to change any mount settings because I don't want to corrupt my LUN.

Thanks!
