Backup by datastore - individual vm setting e.g.credentials

Post by Spex »

At the moment I plan a job layout for about 1000vm's - typically on datastore luns 1-2 TB.
Since I found no other way to avoid having multiple active snapshots per datastore (an important design rule) I choose'd to setup jobs with target single datastore.
Now my problem: The vms on that datastores come from different domains and need different credentials for indexing and app aware processing but datastorejobs have only a global per datastore setting.
Same problem exists for different retention periods per vm, ....
Any Ideas to solve this?

In fact, you can go to the Job Settings -> Guest Processing -> Advanced -> Add a required VM -> select it -> and set a given user to be used for guest processing operations. Is that what you're looking for? Thanks.

Yeah I think this helps. If I include a special vm credential in the guest processing operation does this override a "default" datastore-credential that fits to most of the vms.

Hi.

I think that it would be better for you to configure backup jobs by VMware folders and not datastore,
and of course each client domain will be in its own VMware folder.
Managing will be much easier and safer.
I don't think that there is really a big problem if during backup you will have a few VMs (2 -> 4) with active snapshot.
How many VMs per datastore do you currently have?
How many jobs do you plan to run in parallel?

Especially with so many VMs, configuring backup at VM level is not the best idea.
