v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
Hi,
I am reading through the v7 documentation right now and took a close look at the new Backup Copy Jobs.
As far as I can see it needs a repository just as the normal backups use. What if I want to copy the backup to a USB drive or other swapable media (disk based)? Can it handle missing previous data, and do a full copy every time? Or is this only possible with tape drives?
Greetings,
Manuel

Hello, yes - you can use removable drives with Backup Copy jobs. You are probably already aware and were using ForceCreateMissingVBK key before to achieve the same with regular backup jobs in previous versions. This key also applies to the Backup Copy jobs in v7. Thanks!

[MERGED] : Backing up to USB
I have jsut installed Version7 for VMware and was wondering what is the best way to backup to the USB drive. is it better to Backup the files via the 'File Copy' or by the 'Backup copy' option. We are going to be changing the USB disks every day for an offsite backup.

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
ForceCreateMissingVBK does not seem to work with backup copy jobs.
I only get
19.08.2013 22:24:46 :: Error: Client error: Agent: Failed to process method {Stg.OpenReadWrite}: File not found.
when the sync starts in the jobs progress window.
According to the logs it tries to access a .vib file and don't care about the missing vbk at all.
Also annoying: when I want to remove the backups from disk I get the message that the backups are in use by the SureBackup Job. Even if I select the vm for the application group from a more recent backup that is not yet in the copied backup. I have to select a VM that is not in the copy job so I can remove the backups from disk.

Please open a support case, as this key was designed to work with Backup Copy jobs in v7.

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
I guess the problem is that the minimal restore points in a copy job are 2. So it tries an incremantal but can not find the vbk.

Don't guess, open the case. Logs review by our techs is much more effective and will most likely will tell the reason.

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
While running a backup copy job to an RDX drive, it fails with the error " Processing 'VM1' Error: Client error: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host"
I have tried rescanning the backup repositories and the RDX repositories shows up properly. The RDX is directly connected to the ESXi host.
The primary backup is on a Synology drive. Could it be that the ESXi host is blocking the RDX drive?
Thanks

Hi Arun,
If this is the only error you have in the backup copy job log, then I guess yes, it could be... Btw, does it always fail with this error message or it happens randomly?
Thanks!

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
It is happening every time the Backup copy job runs to the RDX drive. It seems to be going to 70 to 80% and fails with the error 12/20/2012 1:03:54 PM :: Processing 'VM1' Error: Client error: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Also comes this error 12/20/2012 1:10:54 PM :: Processing 'VM2' Error: Client error: End of file
Exception from server: The specified network name is no longer available.
Failed to flush file buffers. File: [\\10.x.x.x\e\Offsite to RDX_1\Offsite to RDX2012-12-20T114943.vib].
Failed to perform data backup.

Yep, looks like it is a connection issue, but if you want to dig deeper, please reach our technical guys for further troubleshooting.

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
My setup is the primary backups first go to the Synology disk station and the Backup copy job is configured to go to the RDX drive. So does this mean the vbk is copied from the Synology to the RDX or is it that the Backup Copy job goes to the source VM on the host again?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
Backup copy job takes VMs from existing backup files, in your case it is from the Synology device. Backup copy jobs do not "touch" production VMs at all.

So that means Veeam is not able to copy the backup files from the Synology to the RDX drive due to some permission issues perhaps.

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
Backup Copy Job does not copy the backup files 1:1. It uses the backup files to read out the needed Information to build a new backup file at Destination.

How did you present your RDX device to the backup console? As a network share? Is there any other way to do that?zak2011 wrote: [\\10.x.x.x\e\Offsite to RDX_1\Offsite to RDX2012-12-20T114943.vib].

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
Can you mount this RDX box to any Windows or Linux box and create a repository there? The reason why I want you to try this is that if you search these forums you'll see similar topic talking about network issues with CIFS backup targets.

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
The RDX box can be seen as a removable drive on the Veeam Server in My Computer. So, I hope this is what you were asking about. I have shared this drive with full access and then presented this drive as a network share in the Veeam backup console. I hope i had done this the right way. Is there any other recommended way to present the RDX to the Veeam server?
The Backup Copy just stops with this error
12/20/2012 11:04:13 PM :: Error: Client error: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
Thanks!

Hmm...do you have any other errors in the debug log? I would ask our support team for assistance with logs review. Does regular backup jobs also fail with the same error if you point them to the RDX device?

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
I have raised a case With support about this and they say
" ULTRIUM LTO standart is supported, RDX drives are not."
There are many forum users who have used RDX drive, so why does support say it is not supported?

Regular backup job seems to be failing on the RDX also. This is very strange!

Re: v7 Backup Copy Job removable media (rotated drives)
From my perspective, the support guy must have referred to the fact the RDX-based appliance can look like a tape library or autoloader, instead of virtual RDX drives. And, according to him, such scenario shouldn’t work with tape functionality of version 7.0; though, it still looks a little bit strange since we can confirm that, at least, one device has been tested in this mode.
So, what is the particular model of the RDX device in question?
Thanks.

Thanks Valdimir. I should have probably been more specific to the support. They have confirmed it was a misunderstanding and that RDX should work. However they have advised on the following registry hack
