Backup job failure after "file copy"

Post by mv43 »

Error:
"Name Status Start time End time Size Read Transferred Duration Details
xx-dc1 Error 10:00:36 PM 10:00:37 PM 0.0 KB 0.0 KB 0.0 KB 0:00:00 Task failed Error: Object xx-dc1 not found."

Scenario:
VMware Essentials 5.1 U1 and Veeam 6.5
Backup job type is reverse incremental

I created a "file copy" job of a DC which was shut down from one esxi local datastore to another esxi local datastore. I then removed from inventory on original esxi server and then added to inventory on the new one. When I fired it up I chose "I moved it" because I want to keep all the uuid/mac settings etc.. I then modified the veeam job as it used to point to the old esxi server and added it under from the new esxi server. I don't use a "cluster" for obvious reasons as I'm only using the Essentials version of VMware, however I do have the VCenter server and DataCenter name listed when you select to add a host. I also have both esxi hosts added as separate servers in order to backup VCenter properly. Why is it refusing to backup my VM Guest after these changes (note, original job backed up fine on old esxi host)? I have an idea it might have to do with selecting "I moved it" instead of "I copied it" but would like to know if there is a way to remedy this without having to select "I copied" if indeed this is what could be causing the issue. It can resolve the DNS name of both the VCenter server and the target VM Guest.

Hello Michael,

When you register VM in the inventory it automatically receives a new moref ID from the vCenter Server/ESXi host. Since all VMs are tracked using this ID, backup job was not able to find a new VM based on the ID it had in the database. In order to resolve this, you need to re-add this VM to the job.

Thank you!

That's the problem, I in fact did re-add the VM to the job. I edit, select virtual machines, removed it, then re-added it using the path from the VCenter server/datacenter/host/vmguest.. I haven't tried adding it via the host directly from the "add objects"/"select objects"/"hosts and clusters"... I will try that, however I wanted to select it via the VCenter object and not the host itself only.

edit: just tried and it continues to fail with the same error.

here is a snippet of the logs

Well.. you still should be able to add this VM using vCenter Server connection. Have you tried to run a "Rescan" after you've re-added the VM in question to the inventory?

BTW, this workaround is no longer needed in v7.

That's fantastic.. thank you for the heads up on this.. still trying to figure out why this keeps failing.
