Backup Veeam server to NAS

Post by Inspyreone »

Hi Guys,

I have a quick question that I would like to get confirmed.

We are looking to set up a very simple server infrastructure. We plan to run the following:
1x server w/ RAID5 running VMWare ESX (free)
1x Windows SBS 2011 (virtualised)
1x Windows Server 2008 R2 as an RDS (virtualised)
Several 2TB single disk NAS drives

All user directories will be set for folder redirection to the SBS, so all data for the company will be on the SBS box.

What we are looking to do is have Veeam installed on the 2008 R2 RDS server and backup both server image states via CIFS to the NAS as well as be able to do file level restores if necessary (I expect VSS will suffice, but always good to have an alternative).

I wanted to confirm if this is a compatible solution and any downsides if any?
All advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

Actually, this scenario isn’t going to work due to the fact that free ESX(i) isn’t supported by Veeam Backup and Replication since it has certain vSphere API blocked. Thanks.

Ah. So if I get a vsphere licence and run the full version. Will this then work?

Simple infrastructure means simple backup. I see no downsides, however, note that your RDS server will be backed up in network mode, since Veeam B&R cannot hotadd itself.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I have been looking at the vSphere essentials kit http://store.vmware.com/DRHM/store?Acti ... =285017500 to use with VEEAM backup free edition.

By having the vSphere essentials licence, will this then give the functionality to perform live backups of the virtual machines to my NAS without having to pause the boxes?

I did check the link supplied by v.Eremin and it does say minimum licence required is vSphere Essentials. Just wanted to confirm that would be the same for the free version of VEEAM. I assume so, just be good to get confirmation.

Appreciate all of your help.

Yes, vSphere Essentials will be enough.
