iSCSI support for HP 3PAR storage
Hello,
I came through a really awkward moment finding out that the v7 that I was expecting for so long lacks support for the 3PAR iSCSI storage series.
Since there is nothing on internet regarding the specific support matrix, could development team advice when to expect support for the iSCSI series?
Mate I.

Re: Only FC support for 3PAR storages??
Hello Mate,
You're right, currently 3PAR FC storages are supported only, unfortunately, I cannot give you any ETA on support for iSCSI series.
Thank you.

Re: Only FC support for 3PAR storages??
The decision to only support was taken based on 3PAR deployment statistics from HP (vast majority of 3PAR users are deploying it with FC). For example, we do not support FC connectivity for LeftHand storage for the same reasons, most deployment are using iSCSI. There are no technical issues or difficulties, and we will be able to add support for iSCSI 3PAR down the road if there is fairly large amount of requests for this functionality... as always, it comes down to priorities.

Re: Only FC support for 3PAR storages??
Thanks for the fast reply,
Note that the iSCSI is already at 40Gbps speeds down the road whereas DC is still struggling at 16Gbps. Looking into the price difference, I would say it will be expected to have an increased demand over iSCSI rather FC. We had iSCSI StoreVirtual at 10Gbps and EVA4400 with FC connectivity, so we decided dropping FC completely and go with the iSCSI line.
Anyway thanks for your prompt reply, kindly drop me an email once you have news with the iSCSI connectivity, I hate to receive a 3PAR with iSCSI and not being able to utilize storage based snapshots for backup!

Re: Only FC support for 3PAR storages??
Hi teeam.
Not wishing to hijack this thread, but I also have requirement for SAN snapshot support on HP 3PAR over iSCSI. ironically by HP UK. I visited their UK HQ to install VBR v7 at their customer demo lab on a mobile demo rack that HP use at tradeshows etc. Due to limited rack space they only use iSCSI to connect to their ESXi host and there isn't physical space to add another server with an FC HBA.
Thanks.

I am a bit in awe... perhaps my own fault for not investigating prior to migrating to 3PAR w/iscsi... but it's integration with Veeam was a real plus when making the array selection. After trying to get Veeam and 3PAR to unite... FC ONLY?!! One step forward, two steps back. Extremely disappointed.

Hi Rob, I am sorry to hear you are disappointed. Indeed, the FC requirement is explicitly documented in the System Requirements. However, we do have iSCSI support on our short term roadmap. Thanks!

Re: iSCSI support for HP 3PAR storage
Hello VEEAM,
Any news on the iSCSI support? The last response from VEEAM was that iSCSI was coming with the next major release, is version 8 the major checkpoint for this?
Awaiting for your update,
Mate I.

Gostev, you stated: "However, we do have iSCSI support on our short term roadmap."
We see a growing demand for 3PAR in smaller environments where iSCSI is used.
My question is therefore: How short term is your roadmap ? When exactly can we expect 3PAR iSCSI support ?
With kind regards,
Laurens

Re: iSCSI support for HP 3PAR storage
There is a chance, but I will not know for sure until September. Technically, it's implemented, but this is the easiest part anyway. We always have more features implemented than we actually release... up to 20% may get dropped right before RTM based on QC results (due to not having production quality), and delivered in a later release. This approach allows us to make the release timelines, and not delay availability of 80% of new features over remaining 20%.
The only features that can never be dropped are major, core features of the new release that we pre-announce in advance. We will not release without them no matter what. Now, on top of these few features, there are about 100 more minor v8 features (including iSCSI support for 3PAR) that are implemented in v8 branch, but historically only less than 90% of them will actually survive. This is also the very reason why we do not publish the complete What's New document until we have RTM build available. Or make potentially false promises on these forums, for that matter
Hope this makes sense.
Thanks!

I did a little test with our iscsi 3par, but i wouldnt make a storage snapshot. Is iscsi 3par officially supported by Veeam?

Yes, both FC and iSCSI-based 3PARs are supported.

Re: iSCSI support for HP 3PAR storage
For the test we used Veeam 8.0.0.917 and it had access to the volumes on the 3par as it was able to make direct-san backup. The Storage snapshot option was enabled and we used a enterprise plus license. As far as i know all the prerequisites are met for the test.

When storage integration is set up properly, there would be a different tag in the job mode, not a direct SAN one.ACC wrote:it had access to the volumes on the 3par as it was able to make direct-san backup.
