Best Setup For De-Dup

Hi

I was wondering how to get the best De-Dup rates when we setup our new production Veaam 4 server and i have a few questions if you dont mind me asking

1. Does it only De-Dup per job ?
2. Is it best to store all the backup jobs in one folder on the backup destination ? (fibre channel lun presented to the Veeam Backup Server)

Any other tips would be gratefully recived

PS we will be doing backups using the vStorage API thing.

Hello Gareth,

Yes, de-duplication works only within one job, so to leverage all the benefits of de-duplication please group similar VMs to one job (e.g. one job for one template VMs, one job for all Linux VMs and so on). As for storing all backups in the same folder, it's up to you, you can use multiple destintation targets.

how about the destination ? do we have to separate the destination or can we mixed it with another backup job as the file is just one very big large file ?

Albert,

You may use the same destination for all of your backups to centralize the backup storage, on the other hand you can store backups whenever you want, with Veeam it is very easy to achieve

wow, this is something great that I've just heard.

how about restoring, in case the backup server got crashed and i must rebuilt it from scratch, how can i restore the Vms from the very big .VBK file then ?

Albert,

Right now, in case you've got everything crashed, you should install Veeam server, import the VBK file to the console and perform a restore (entire VM, VM files or FLR). When you launch the restore wizard for entire VM, you have the ability to choose any VM that was in the backup job as well as any restore point available for that job. For additional information please refer to our User's Guide, which contains many useful tips.
