Solution for many branch offices
Hello everybody.
I not sure about Veeam 7 architecture for solution for many branch office and one HQ (there should be only management).
Architecture 1: use one Backup server for HQ and proxy/repository for every branch
Architecture 2: Enterprise Manager for HQ and Backup server/proxy/repository for every branch?
Every branch has 3 x ESXi (licenced vSphere), every only with LOCAL storage. There are VMs on every ESXi.
Backup should be done to local branch disk drive (NAS or USB drive; TBD), not to HQ.
There are cca 40 branches, i'm not sure about hw configuration of Backup server for Architecture 1.
And I'm not sure if 40 proxies are supported, I have not found nothing about how many proxies are supported by one Backup server or how many Backup Servers are supported by one Enterprise manager.
Can you help me make right decision?

Hello Blueear,
If I were you I would go with the first variant - single backup server and proxy server/repository in each branch office. I see no issues running 40 proxy servers with a single backup server, just make sure you size your Veeam B&R server properly.
Thank you!

The only issue I see in the first variant is Windows FLR, which is performed through the backup server. However, you could either install another instance of Veeam B&R in the remote site, import the backup there, and perform FLR locally, or use Other OS for such restores. Thanks.

Hello Foggy.
That means Windows file-level restore can be provided only by B/R server?
Is this correct for Veeam 7 version too?
Thank you.

That means that during Windows FLR disks of the backed up VM are mounted to the backup server. You can find more details in the topic referred above. This is also valid for v7. Thanks.

Thank you.
Do you think Enterprise manager (using Standard version of Veeam backup) is enough solution to have centralized management?

Re: Solution for many branch offices
Enterprise Manager provides visibility across all your backup servers, giving you some basic reporting information about backup infrastructure, ability start/stop jobs, search files through all existing backups, perform 1-Click FLR operations, and some more, however it does not provide all the functionality of the Veeam B&R console. So it's up to you to decide whether it is sufficient for your management tasks.

Thank you, foggy.
Architecture 1 is not right solution because Windows FLR.
Architecture 2 is not right solution because Enterprise Manager has a very limited funcionalities.
I think we should look for another backup product ...
Thank you again.

Re: Solution for many branch offices
Why workarounds provided above are not applicable in your case (using Other OS FLR or having additional Veeam B&R responsible for restores)?

Architecture 1 IS the best solution in your case. Not sure what your concern is about, since you can use Other OS wizard to restore Windows/Linux Guest OS files in the same way you do with native Windows FLR wizard.blueear wrote:Architecture 1 is not right solution because Windows FLR.

Hello.
And how Other OS restore working?
Sorry, I read Administration guide and I didn't find information, that Restore From Windows is provided by B/R server and Other OS restore is provided another way.
Thank you.

Re: Solution for many branch offices
With Other OS FLR, VM virtual disks are mounted to the Linux-based virtual appliance VM residing on the repository in the remote site and restore traffic does not go between sites. More details, if required.

Hello foggy.
That means Linux VA is created on-the-fly for restore files?
Linux VA can recognize NTFS or FAT32 volumes and restore Windows files with correct permisions?
Why proxy/repository server cannot mount NTFS/FAT volumes for restore instead B/R server?
Thank you.

Another question - licensing ...
On every physical server is only one VM !!!
Virtualization is not used to achieve VM density but for better management and better restore/disaster recovery.
I know only about licensing per CPU ...
Does licesing per VM exist?
Thank you.

Due to historical reasons, this is also explained in the topic I referred to in my first post.blueear wrote:Why proxy/repository server cannot mount NTFS/FAT volumes for restore instead B/R server?

Only licensing issue is open to make choice to use for Veeam.

No, Veeam B&R is licensed per CPU socket of the source hosts.blueear wrote:Does licesing per VM exist?
