migration and update of Veeam environment

Post by SAVANTIS »

Hi all,

I hop you can give me some advice on the following:

I need to upgrade and expand my Veeam environment from 6.5 to 7.x

My situation:

- one Veeam Backup & Replication (B&R) server, with local SQL database. This has to be upgraded to version 7
- Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager (BEM) with SQL database on remote server. TBEM itself has to be migrated to anothaer server ánd upgraded to version 7

New situation:

- upgraded B&R and BEM server
- Veeam One installation

Some help/advice would be very appreciated.

Pim, install Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager v7 on a new server pointing it to its previous SQL database during installation, then perform Veeam B&R in-place upgrade to v7. General upgrade recommendations are outlined in the release notes document available with your download. Thanks.

Hello foggy,

thanks for the reply. Do I need to "unlink" my B&R server from the current BEM server?

I have run through nearly all the documents, but could not find one specific for my situation.

Thanks again.

Nope, you don’t have to do it. Just upgrade backup server after completing the upgrade of Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager server.

Thanks.

Re: Migration and update Veeam Infrastructure

Hi Pim, it all comes down to the size of your infrastructure. In small environments, is common to see all components (VBR, EM and their SQL) installed on a single server. This is by far the most simple deployment, and a decent VM or physical machine is enough to manage everything.

On larger infrastructure, the split of components can be a better solution, or if there are specific needs as for example exposing EM to the external network for users access. In this case I would place EM in a dedicated VM and configured its network to run in a DMZ. Also, in these situations Veeam One would probably needs its own server, since a large infrastructure would put a significant load on it for all the monitoring activities.

Hi Luca,

I would not call our infra large (around 70 VM's, 3 ESX hosts).

We have a VBRCatalog around 35 GB, but that also contains data from old jobs which we will use for "historical reasons".

What do I do with that database?

Well, since you said in the first post EM needs to be migrated, I would first migrate it into the VBR server: detach db, move it to the VBR sql server, install EM on the VBR server pointing at the migrated db.
Once all components are in the same server, a simple upgrade to v7 will be good, first EM and then VBR.

You can move this folder to the new server by following these instructions > http://www.veeam.com/kb1453 (the KB should be valid for version 7 as well)
