Veeam Enterprise Manager Upgrade 6.0 to 7.0

Post by hollow »

Hello Community,

In my existing environment, I have Veeam Enterprise Manager 6.0 using SQL 2005 standard.
I would like to upgrade the manager to 7.0

Instead of an in-place upgrade, I would like to set up another VM from scratch, install Veeam Enterprise Manager 7.0 and point it to SQL 2008 R2 Standard.
Ultimately, I will decom VEM 6.0.

Questions:
1. Is it ok to have 2 Veeam Enterprise Manager, 6.0 and 7.0 running side by side before decommissioning 6.0?
2. In my above scenario, do I need to do any exporting from v6.0 and import it into v7.0?
3. Do I need to take note of anything in this scenario since I will be using a brand new SQL 2008 R2 server?

I have did a search on the internet but most sites I have been to does an in-place upgrade instead of setting up a fresh new VEM 7.0 server.

I would like to find out more before messing with the production site.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Johnson,

1. Yes, that's fine.
2. No, assuming all your backup servers are still in-place, all data will be re-collected from them. BTW, do you do VM Guest indexing?
3. No, don't need to do that.

Thank you!

Some jobs have the "VM Guest indexing" enabled, while some dont.
Is there anything I should take note on this setting?

It depends. If you're using Enterprise Edition of Veeam B&R and do need to keep index files for backups that are no longer present in the backup repositories, then you would also need to migrate the Catalog data from old EM to the new one.

Alright! I have one last question.

Is SQL 2008 R2 express suffice for Enterprise Manager 7.0? Or do we need a Standard version of SQL?

Just to add on, I am talking about Enterprise manager, not the backup server. I would like to find out how to determine whether to use SQL Express or SQL standard version for Enterprise manager.

Hi Johnson,

How many VMs are totally protected in your VI? Are we talking about thousands, hundreds? If it is less that 1000 VMs, then SQL Server Express should be sufficient.

Thanks!
