delete restore points

Post by SmithJohn »

E.g. for VM1, 6 snapshots taken so far:
1. Full at 01Jan
2. Incremental at 01Feb
3. Incremental at 01Mar
4. Incremental at 01Apr
5. Incremental at 01May
6. Incremental at 01Jun

Say, someone delete snapshot 1 (Full at 01Jan), what will happen? the remaining snapshots 2 - 6 still useful?

Incremental restore points always rely on the corresponding full backup (VBK), so deleting it will make the entire chain unusable.

You would be able to restore from previous incremental restore points (up to the corresponding full). Restore points created after the deleted one will be unrecoverable.

Yes, you can specify either active or synthetic full to be created daily in the job settings.

Restore points are deleted according to retention settings specified in the job settings. Deleting restore points manually is not recommended as the corresponding records will remain in the Veeam B&R database and UI (until wiped out by retention).

As mentioned, this method is called "Retention policy" and is configured in the job settings (Job settings -> Storage -> Restore point to keep on disk).

Retention policy works differently for different backup methods. The pretty descriptive information regarding it can be found in the corresponding section of our Help Center.

Thanks.

Understand the use of restore points. Just in case I delete one of the restore points through veeam powershell
May I know the use of "remove restore points " veeam shell script would also corrupted the backup chain?

Whatever method is used (be it automatic Powershell method, or manual one), deleting restore point will make restore points dependable on it unusable. Therefore, the usage of native built-in retention policy is recommended, since it will handle this process for you.

Thanks.

[MERGED] Disk space - deleting old jobs

Post by ashman70 »

I currently have a client with about 4 VM's using Veeam 6.5 standard to backup to a NAS, as the jobs run, the NAS fills up to the point where the jobs warn me it is running low on space. What I have been doing is going into the NAS and selectively deleting older incremental jobs, however I don't want to jeopardize the ability to do a full restore should the need ever arise. What is the best practice recommended way to deal with this scenario?

The recommended way is to adjust retention policy settings to remove old restore points. What backup mode are you using?

I believe I am using reversed incremental. How do you adjust retention?

You can do that via advanced backup job job settings. Once you do this, please re-run your backup job to remove unnecessary backup files.
