In Windows Server 2012 R2 environments with Windows Server deduplication feature in use, be sure to install Veeam Backup & Replication on Windows Server 2012 R2, and enable Data Deduplication feature. Windows Server 2012 deduplication driver is not compatible with Windows Server 2012 R2 deduplication, causing file level recovery errors with false data corruption reports

What is exactly meant with a Server 2012R2 environment? Which part of the environment needs to be running 2012R2?

I would like to backup a Server 2012R2 VM with data dedup enabled, but do I need to have my VBR server on Server 2012R2 as well or does it work as well while my VBR server and repo is running on 2008R2? I will be using SAN transport mode.

What it says is that in order to be able to perform file-level recovery from the Windows Server 2012 R2 VM with Data Deduplication feature enabled, you need Veeam B&R to be installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 machine with deduplication feature enabled. If you have it installed on Windows Server 2012, you will experience said issues.
