VM W2012 fileserver I activated dedup and get big increments

Post by kte »

I activated de dedup feature in a windows 2012 fileserver. He is now deduping the files, so I guess it changes alot of blocks.
Anyone has expierience with that ? The VM is arround 7TB -> so the dedup will take some time
If the process if finished, will my incrementes go small again? Or must I change the blocksize in veeam like for SQL or exchange?

Thanks

You mean you activated Windows 2012 Dedup inside a VM, and then this VM is saved with Veeam? Honestly I never tested this situation, but I would say you can expect large amounts of changed blocks in Veeam, since the VM is reading and writing many blocks in order to do the deduplication itself.

Agree with Luca, I expect large backup files on the incremental files as well. Changing dedupe setting to use smaller blocks (WAN) might help in this situation.

I will wait until the dedup task is finished
Because before I had only 20 GB increment a day
