B&R v6.5.0.144 quick migration fails with ESXi 5.10

Post by a4wanman »

Just upgraded to ESXi 5.1.0 build 1065491. Testing out the Backup & Replication v6.5.0.144 (Patch#3) to copy the virtual machines using quick migration. The migration fails after about 1:40. We have tried to migrate VM from the free ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.1 Essentials and also from the free ESXi 5.0 to ESXi 5.1 Foundations.

I see the error 7/22/2013 8:17:13 AM :: Creating VM snapshot Error: Current license or ESXi version prohibits execution of the requested operation.
in the history.

Anyone have any clues?

Thanks.

Please be aware that free ESX(i) isn’t supported by Veeam Backup and Replication since it has certain vSphere API blocked. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response. Is this something new to v6.5?

We have 1 copy the free B&R 64-bit version of v6.1 running that can copy from the free ESXi to a licensed ESXi. I was trying to use the latest and greatest version.

[MERGED] Veeam 7.0.0.771 and ESXi5.5

Post by lm_ib »

Hello,

I have upgraded B& R from 6.5 to 7, followed by and upgrade to the new R2 version.
Following that, I have upgraded the target machine ESXi 5.1 to 5.5.

Currently, when running replication jobs, It fails with the following error:
:: Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: All target backup proxies are offline, outdated or currently being processed.
:: Error: Current license or ESXi version prohibits execution of the requested operation.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Please check your ESXi license, free ESXi is not supported.

For you information:
Veeam B& R 6.5 and 7, works fine with esxi 5.1free as a target machine.
Stopped working after installing esxi 5.5

Yes, this is explained in the post referred to above. And here's another topic regarding that: Veeam with vSphere 5 Hypervisor (e.g. free ESXi) works...

Foggy,

I believe that this information must be out there and clear in KB and install notes provided by Veeam (not just a notice of unsupported free versions!)

B& R works fine in 5.1? Veeam proudly announces 5.5 support?
...it should note that free 5.5 will not work anymore!

I think it is in Veeam's best interest to inform its customers correctly to avoid this hole process:
- upgrade 6.5 to 7
- install R2 patch
- upgrade esxi 5.5
- uninstall 5.5 and re-install 5.1

....that, without the need for deep digging and searching through the forum the figure that out.

Actually there is no need to do that, as we have this note right on our website (in the download area) stating that ESXi free is not supported, no matter what version you're using:
Note: Free vSphere Hypervisor (free ESXi) is not supported. vSphere Essentials or higher license level required.

Most likely it worked due to VMware not enforcing the restriction in the VDDK, see Vladimir's second post above for more info.

Hope this makes sense.

Vitaly,

It makes sence, but it is also OK to disagree:
I believe that a better effort should be commenced, not a laconic statement of free versions not being supported.

Hi, what do you suggest we do specifically? This statement really covers the situation fully and completely.

I understand you are able to make it work in Veeam 6.5 and vSphere 5.1, but we never supported free ESXi regardless of this fact. And you could only make it work due to VMware accidentally removing the protection against this in the specific ESXi build, so using this capability is basically nothing but exploiting this temporary loophole...

Obviously, we cannot be recommending that our customers stay on vSphere 5.1 in order to be able to continue exploiting the loophole?

Thanks.
