Backup Oracle DB cluster with ASM disk

Post by adam900331 »

Hy.

My customer use Oracle DB cluster (two VM) with ASM disk. I tried to backup with Veeam Agent the two VM using the application aware prcoessing to create transactional consitent backup. But when the job start I got the following error:
Error: Unable to perform backup: Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) disk configuration is not supported

When I disable the application aware processing i have not got the error message and the backup was successfully. I read some information about the RMAN plugin. What about it? If I would like to backup transactional consistent backup, do i only do it with RMAN plugin? In addition i would like to create image based backup too.

Thanks.

Hello,
yes, the RMAN plugin is required for RAC clusters (RAC clusters use ASM).

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

Additionally, you can back up the non-ASM volumes VM-based or by agent.

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks Hannes.

Do i understand correctly to backup the non-ASM volumes which is related to the DB servers without enable application aware processing? So I configured the volumes backup mode in job and select the non-ASM volumes and disable the application aware processing. After i will config the RMAN backup for the ASM volumes.

I would want to chime in here because we face a similar issue.

Task is to backup an ASM system using the agent. Non-ASM volumes are backed up without application aware processing easily already.

In addition we have to backup the Oracle DB via the RMAN plugin using a RMAN script.
We want to trigger the script right out of the agent job via a pre-script.

But as soon as I disable application awareness, I cannot do any pre- or post-scripting any more.
When I leave application awareness enabled, I get:

Code: Select all

Error: Unable to perform backup: Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) disk configuration is not supported
even if I only backup a file or volume which is not part of ASM.

Is there a way to suppress the agent checking for ASM and thus denying all activities?

Thanks,
Mike

PS: I know that V12 can now schedule RMAN backups, but this environment has to stay on V11 for other reasons for some more time.

Hello,

No, there is no option to disable this check but did you try pre-job/post-job scripts and not guest processing ones?

Thanks!

Wouldn't those run on the VBR server?
We want to have them run on the workload to trigger a process (e.g. RMAN backup) there.

Yes, those are executed on the backup server but you may try to call RMAN scripts remotely.

Thanks!
