Hi,
I have a customer who is looking to initiate a SQL Transaction Log backup via a SQL Procedure.
The SQL Procedure is run and checks databases for fragmentation and then runs indexing/etc on a per-database level.
The goal is to have Veeam run a Transaction Log backup at the end of this procedure, preferably just on the one database. Ideally we'd also be able to do this at an instance level as well but I'm not sure if that's possible.
We're talking about a physical SQL Server which means Veeam Agent for Windows managed by a VBR server.
Also potentially got hundreds of SQL Servers so installing the VBR console to control jobs isn't ideal either unfortunately.
Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Re: Veeam SQL Log Backup initated via SQL Procedure
Hello,
that sounds like a "classic" request for a VDI plugin for SQL management studio.
It's a request that comes up from time to time and it's something we are investigating.
Best regards,
Hannes

Hello,
@PCM-AndyW Would you be so kind to clarify the reason to bind log backup schedule to DB fragmentation check?
Thanks!

Re: Veeam SQL Log Backup initated via SQL Procedure
Hi,
Due to the size of the databases, the defragmentation/procedure is very intensive on the server and causes a high number of transactions within SQL.
Consequently, the Transaction Log file grows significantly and this can consume all available disk space for a single database.
If we can initiate a Veeam SQL Transaction Log backup from within the SQL Procedure/T-SQL we can then reduce the space consumed by the SQL Transaction Log File.
Currently the procedure backs up the Transaction Logs using the native SQL Backup process, but this would then cause a break in the backup chains which is obviously unacceptable.
Due to the RPO/RTO requirements of the organisation, we cannot use Simple Recovery Mode on the databases.
Regards,
Andy

Hi Andrew,
I appreciate the detailed description of the scenario. Did you consider Copy-only mode for native backups?
Thanks!
