Backup Copy repository to tape

Post by dib »

Hi

We are looking into getting a backup copy job to an other location. On that location we want to backup to tape as well. but i can't seem to find anything on backup to tape from backup copy repositories.

Our backup plan i like this on our main server backup server now.
  • Daily incremental to disc then to tape
  • Weekly synthetic full to disc the to tape (Active last Friday of the months)
Our tape rotation is like this
  • 8 sets daily tapes
  • 12 sets weekly tapes
  • 4 sets quarterly tapes
  • 1 yearly tape
I don't know if it is possible to keep same setup for tape backup, from the backup copy repository on the other location.

Hope somebody can clear this for me.

Hi Dennis,
Yes, it is possible. You may use GFS media pool for historical (weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly) backups and simple media pool for the daily ones.
Thanks!

Ok, so it would create synthetic full to tape from the backup copy repository for the weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly?

my plan for the backup copy repository is 10 restore point (14 days backup Monday til Friday) Short term archive and then long term archive on tapes.

Yes, GFS files are always full backups which are made syntheticly in the scheduled day.

Keep in mind that GFS media pool do not process incremental restore points. Another hint: when GFS tape job is scheduled to run at a specific date and source job has a full backup on disk for that date, synthesized full backup is not created and replaced by original full backup.
