Backup to Tape cheaper licencing option

Post by nixcamic »

I work with a small non-profit and at the moment we are using the community edition and it does *almost* everything we need, the only thing missing is the Backup to Tape option. However to get that we need to switch to the lowest tier paid version which has A: Half the VUL and B: Is a difficult price to justify to the directors of the non-profit for one feature. It would be great if there was an option (like some other providers have) to purchase just the features needed on a license, because honestly the community edition does do everything we need at the moment.

(Plus, as a non-profit we can purchase a competitors software for about $145 because of their non-profit pricing, which makes this even more difficult to justify, however, I'd prefer to stick with veeam if possible)

It only costs $400 per year to stick to Veeam ;) which is a few percent comparing to how much the rest of the infrastructure costs (servers, licenses, disk storage, tape hardware etc.)

$145 end user price would means less that $100 net to Veeam after channel takes its toll. Which is less than processing 1 support case costs to us, not even counting any other expenses. As you can see, it makes absolutely no business sense.

To make such price work we would need to outsource our support to low-cost locations instead of having it in-house... as always, you get what you pay for.

I understand, and to be fair the $145 is actually just admin costs, the backup software is donated (through techsoup) and w/o support. I am not saying you would need to match that price, I just included it to accentuate that in cases like ours where we only need one feature from Enterprise, it can be a tough case for IT to make to smaller businesses or non-profits. However a one time fee to unlock that feature in CE would be easier to convince them about.
