Backup to Tape Full + Inc

Post by besofakissen »

Hi All

Is there a way we can manage to backup the following to tape.

On first monday ot the month we do an active full backup of all systems. Then we always do incremenetal the hole month until the first monday of the next month.

So what we want to do is following.

Backup to tape on Sunday first week: full backup + all incremenetal from first week
Backup to tape on Sunday second week: full backup + all incremenetal from first and second week
Backup to tape on Sunday third week: full backup + all incremenetal from first, second and third week
Backup to tape on Sunday 4th wekk: full backup + all incremenetal from all 4 weeks
maybe there one week more...

With our current setup, VBR only backups the incrementals from second week (all files that are not backupped on tape at this time)... Is there a way to force VBR to always backup the latest hole chain? (Active Full + All Incrementals)

We are running VBR 9.5 Update 1!

Cheers!

Hi,
Could you specify, sis your goal to have on the tapes 4 copies of full backup made in the beginning of the month?
If so, why do you need them all?
Thanks!

we Need 1 full backup from month beffining and all incremenetals (30+) until next full backup will be made

we must to be able to restore every singel day from tape. so we create a full backup at the beginning of each month and then do incrementals until next month full is here.

That makes sense. So by the end of the month you need 1 full backup + 30 increments.

If you achieve this:
So what we want to do is following.
Backup to tape on Sunday first week: full backup + all incremenetal from first week
Backup to tape on Sunday second week: full backup + all incremenetal from first and second week
Backup to tape on Sunday third week: full backup + all incremenetal from first, second and third week
Backup to tape on Sunday 4th wekk: full backup + all incremenetal from all 4 weeks
you will have 4 full backups of the same date, 4 copies of the first week increments, 3 copies of the second week increments etc.

If you just set the tape backup job to run once a week, it will copy only missing files, i.e. you will have only one copy of each backup on the tape.

yes and that is exact our problem.

we change our tapes every week... that would mean we split the backups over this different tape sets...

thats why we want every week the hole full backup and incremenets on the tapes and not only the new ones...

so we are ebale to restore the hole system from every of this tape sets

simply...

we want on EVERY backup to tape session the full backup and all incrementals from the newest backup chain and not only the new incremenetals when the full was already backupped in the session before

You can create a file to tape job and set a weekly schedule for its full cycles while completely disabling incremental ones. In this case, a file to tape job will copy all backup files (without exclusions) it finds in a given directory. Thanks.
