Best practice for Tape drives with community

Post by SCSIraidGURU »

I installed my old Windows 7 SP1 hardware and OS into my tape server.

It has 4 x Western Digital Black SATA drives.
Drive C: is 1 TB with Windows and VEEAM Community. M: is 2 TB and holds 4 x VMWare 6 VMs. N: is 4 TB and holds my Family Web Site VM. O: is 4 TB and holds my Wife's Dropbox server.

I set up a 3 Jobs to back up to M, N, and O separately.
VEEAM recognizes my LTO 3 and LTO 4 tape drives on separate controllers.

So far, VM to disk backup speeds are 110 MB/s across the 1 gigabit NIC. First job did 307 GB to disk on 1 hour.

These VMs will go to the LTO 4 tape rotation. I have 3 tapes for Dropbox and 3 tapes for VMTape (all the other VMs).

I do full backups.
Any way to back in Community to disk and then tape?
What is the best practice for backing up?
Any way to have it move the previous backups to a Backups.old directory with the vm data file?
My next project is installing the Windows Agent on this Windows 7 workstation and my new Windows 10 workstation. I want to be able to back them up to tape on the LTO 3.

So far this product has been beyond amazing and awesome.

Well, you could potentially use File to Tape jobs to copy backup files to tape (since they are normal files), but this won't work well when the jobs clash into each other, causing different issues. So you will really need to baby sit this closely.

For proper tape support, you will want to upgrade to a paid version. Keep in mind it's just $400/yr for 5 licenses, which which allow you to protect 5 servers (up to 9 really, due to the built-in buffer allowing to exceed license usage indefinitely). And if you want to protect workstations, those consume 1 licenses for every 3 workstations - so you could protect close to 30 of those for the price ;)

Thanks for your kind words!

They won't sell me it because I use it at home.

I setup three jobs
Backup_M: Other VMs
Backup_N: UbuntuWPMM1TB
Backup_O : Dropbox

File_Tape_VMTAPE1, File_Tape_VMTAPE2, File_Tape_VMTAPE3 : Backup_M and Backup_N
Dropbox1, Dropbox2, Dropbox3: For Backup_O

I haven't gotten to the tape workstation or my new Windows 10 workstation yet.

Each of the tapes will have its own media pool.

Performance on backups to disk are 86-91 MB/s on the Western Digital Black Drives. I haven't tried a restore yet.

Well I tried to backup from VEEAM server my Windows 10 workstation with the agent. Avast is getting a block. Need to work on it. I want to be able to have a backup job to back it up to disk and then tape.

I have Avast on Windows 10 with exclusions and I see allowed traffic in the log. I removed VEEAM agent from Windows 10. I can RDP into Windows 10 from Windows 7. I can ping both IPv4 and IPv6 from Windows 7 to 10. I can't setup a Windows 10 backup job on Windows 7 VEEAM. Rescan fails on VEEAM.

Agent rescan is a different story - usually it has strict error message declaring why rescan failed.
Anyhow, without logs it will be a guessing game(credentials? ports? configuration?), so feel free to open a ticket to find a root cause of it.
/Thanks!
