Create a new tape job from a backup job from disk

Post by carlos.garcia.seidor »

Hello,

Here is our scenario.

We have a customer who has backups on Veeam 11a. He has two types of backup jobs to disk: a daily backup job, and a weekly backup job, with the same vm, but launched once a week. The daily job retains 40 RPs, while the weekly job retains 6 RPs. Both types of backups are performed with incremental reverse backup.

Right now, there is a tape job that feeds from the weekly job and is launched once a week.

Due to a detected incident, the client has asked us to see if we can configure tape jobs pointing to the daily backup, with a retention no longer than a week. I read the following in this link: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

"it is strongly recommended that you set the retention period for the tape archive at least twice longer than the retention period for source backups on disk".

Is there any possibility to create jobs to tape with a lower retention than the one defined in the retention on disk? Will it be necessary for this customer requirement to create an incremental forward chain with the same retention on disk as on tape?

Best regards

Carlos

Hi
Just set the overwrite protection in the tape media pool to the duration you like.
Set protection to 7 days and the tape will be overwritten if there is not enough space left on it.

Hello,

Finally, we have chosen to configure:

Standart Tape Pool (7 days retention)

Tape Job: Fed from a tape job (not from the repository), with the same media pool for full and incremental.

And the result I get is that every day it takes full backups on two tapes, but it doesn't take incrementals. I understand this partly because it is a reverse incremental, is this the expected result? For informing the customer that we can only take full backups and let's see what retention we want to keep.

Best Regards

Carlos
