Duplicate barcode detected during tape library operations - duplicate tape reported in drive, but isn't

Post by StanO »

When I perform a Rescan operation on one of our tape libraries, I get the following error:

6/3/2023 7:32:05 AM Discovering tape libraries on server BACKUP01
6/3/2023 7:32:05 AM Connecting to tape library MSL4048-01 (BACKUP01)
6/3/2023 7:32:05 AM Error Duplicate barcode detected: PBA156L7
6/3/2023 7:32:05 AM Tape library discovery completed

Looking at the media associated with the library, I can see that two tapes (PBA156L7 and one other, PBA208L7) are listed multiple times in the catalog. PBA208L7 is presented in the list as being in the LTO-7 drive within the library, but it is not in the library.

Taking a peek into the database, I see:

Code: Select all

SELECT name, barcode, media_time, original_slot, location_address FROM [VeeamBackup].[dbo].[Tape.tape_mediums] where name = 'PBA208L7' or name = 'PBA156L7'
name barcode media_time original_slot	location_address
PBA208L7	PBA156L7	2023-04-30 05:59:17.000 7 1
PBA208L7	PBA156L7	NULL 7 0
PBA156L7	PBA156L7	NULL 42 42
PBA208L7	PBA156L7	NULL 41 41
PBA156L7	PBA156L7	NULL 7 7
I theorize that removing tapes PBA156L7 (both instances) and PBA208L7 (all three instances) from the catalog and then recataloging these two tapes will clean this up. Is this my best path forward?

We upgraded to v12.0.0.1420 P20230412 three weeks ago and all appeared fine until we tried using this particular library for the first time a week ago.

Support case #06087685 is associated with this issue.

Thanks for any guidance you can provide,

Stan

Hi Stan

I recommend to keep working with our support team. We cannot provide any guidance for removal of entries in the database. If that step is required, it must be done under guidance of our support team.

If you are unhappy about your case, please use our form to contact support management. This allows you to escalate the case to a higher tier:

Thank you Fabian,

I have previously reached out to support management, but will try again explicitly asking that the case be escalated to a higher tier.

I apologize for being unclear in my post. It was not my intent, here, in the forum to get clearance to remove the affected tapes from the catalog by modifying the database directly, rather I was inquiring about removing the tapes from the catalog using the Veeam Backup & Replication Console interface.

Best regards,

Stan
