File to tape backup from network

Post by massimo.favretto »

Hi,
I have a backup server with two network adapter that runs "file to tape" backup from a network share.
This job creates network trafic on both the adapter, located in two separated VLAN. There is a way to force trafic to only one adapter for this job?
Thanks

Hi Massimo

You can configure the traffic routing outside of veeam in the routing table of the operating system on this machine.
But If your NAS is only reachable on one interface, and the tape server is reachable on the other interface, both interfaces have to be used. There is no direct data flow between nas and tape server.

If you maybe could provide more information about the design, we can provide a better answer.

Thanks

Hi Mildur,
my backup server has 2 network, 10.1.x.x/16 with gateway 10.1.10.1 and 10.10.20.x/24 without gateway
NAS in on network 10.10.20.x/24 and reachable directly from same network or throught firewall from 10.1.x.x/16
When job starts it creates 2 network flows, one for every network adapter.
I need to limit only this job to reach the NAS from the same network.
If you need some more information ask me.
Thanks

Hi Massimo

I believe it's a routing issue on your backup server.
Please check with your network team.
I'm not a network expert. But if routing is configured correctly on the backup server, there shouldn't be any real traffic (or none) on the NIC with the gateway.
reachable directly from same network or throught firewall from 10.1.x.x/16
Using two NICs is already a complex configuration. There is no need to allow both connections. Probablby that could be the issue. The backup server can access the NAS over both NICs. Could you maybe use for the NAS a non-routable network?
Using a second NIC only makes sense to me if you access the NAS via iSCSI. Then iSCSI should use a different subnet and on different ports on the NAS. They shouldn't be connected physically to the firewall.

Thanks
